Ulster Spring Closed Matchplays

Spring Junior Matchplay Series

To all Ulster junior players and parents

Please note that the Tennis Ireland Spring Matchplay series has been discontinued from this season due to the heavy junior tournament schedule at National level during the spring weeks.

However Ulster Tennis will run an Ulster Spring Closed Matchplays event, which will be open to players in Ulster only. This event will be run on the following basis:

  • be run over Under 14 and Under 18 age groups only
  • age groups will be limited to a maximum of 16 players in each age group
  • the top four players in the 2018 UTP rankings at Under 14 and Under 18 level will qualify directly for the corresponding age groups in the Ulster Matchplay event
  • regional qualification events will run at Under 14 and Under 18 level (with the same format as the current regional matchplays) and the top two qualifiers from each region will also qualify for the Ulster Matchplay event
  • Under 12 players may play up to Under 14, and Under 16 players may play up to Under 18 (Under 14 players may NOT play up to Under 18)
  • UTP ranking points will be awarded for the regional and Ulster events

This event will provide a further opportunity for players to play at regional and Ulster level and gain points towards their UTP ranking. This will also count towards the total of three Ulster junior tournaments that players must play to be eligible for selection for the Interprovincial championships this season.

Regional qualification events will be held during March and the Ulster Closed Matchplay event is expected to take place in April (after Easter). Dates will be advertised on the Ulster Tennis website very shortly.

Winter Provincial Matchplays Weekend 2

The draws and schedule for the second weekend of the Provincial matchplays are available from the tournament site.

  • All events will be run using the Compass (Swiss) format. You should have 3 or 4 matches regardless of whether you win or lose them. If you lose your first match you are NOT out of the event!
  • Check the day and time of your match carefully - matches are shown for Friday and Saturday. You may have two matches in the same day. The schedule for Sunday's matches will be published on Saturday
  • Each age group will be played indoors at a particular venue, either Belfast Indoor Tennis Arena (Ozone) or David Lloyd Belfast or Belfast Boat Club. The location of each match is displayed against it - please make sure you go to the correct venue!
  • Please arrrive in good time for each match
  • Matches will be best of three sets starting at 0-0 in the first two sets with a championship tie-break in place of a third set. Once a player loses a match, their subsequent matches will be best of three sets starting at 2-2 with a championship tie-break at one set all.
  • Warm-ups wil be strictly limited to 5 minutes.
  • Players must complete all matches to achieve a finishing position

  • 1st offence - Warning
  • 2nd offence - Point Penalty
  • 3rd offence - Game Penalty

A game penalty awarded during a championship tie-break will result in a default.

Recognised tennis attire and appropriate shoes must be worn.  Tracksuit bottoms may be worn during warm-ups only. Leggings and ball shorts worn without skirts/shorts ARE NOT permitted during matches.

Access to Venues

Please note the following for the matchplays:

  • in the case of the Ozone centre, those not playing a match must stay outside the court area and all areas leading to the courts. Parents may wait in the reception area, or drop their child off and collect them when finished.
  • in the case of the Belfast Boat Club bubble, those not playing a match must stay outside the bubble and may wait in the bar area in the clubhouse.

Only officials, UBTI coaches and members of the UBTI Junior Development Committee will be permitted in the court area and the area leading to the courts at the Ozone, courtside at David Lloyd's indoor facility and in the Belfast Boat Club bubble. We assure you the children will be supervised at all times within the indoor venues.
